What is BioWorld Hydrocarbon Treatment?

Oil Spill Clean-Up

BioWorld Bioremediation is a natural and completely safe 2-part product consisting of the following:

  1. Bioenhancement - Bioremediation Enhancer liquid formulation which maximizes the ability of microbes to reproduce and thrive in a hazardous waste situation (in soil or water applications)
  2. Bioaugmentation - Hydrocarbon Digesting Microbes in a dry form for remediating petroleum hydrocarbon waste.

When applied to oil spills, fuel spills, oily water and other petroleum hydrocarbon contamination, BioWorld Hydrocarbon Treatment effectively digests hydrocarbon waste while producing non-hazardous by-products. To date, our products and technology have been used to clean up crude oil, gasoline, diesel, MTBE and other petrochemicals.

Depending on the project type, conditions, initial contaminant concentration and clean-up target, BioWorld Bioremediation is added to the soil or water using in situ or ex situ techniques. BioWorld provides the framework for the microbes to directly metabolize contaminants and create enzymes for efficient conversion of contaminants to water, carbon dioxide and other non-hazardous substances such as fatty acids.

Native soil have many types of tiny creatures called microbes.

When hazardous wastes contaminate the soil, the existing microbes struggle to survive. Strains known to be efficient at degrading the waste may or may not be present. In addition, the microbes generally lack the proper nutrients to reproduce and thrive.

Using BioWorld Bioremediation Technology, the proper strains of selected microbes and soluble forms of the necessary nutrients are easily applied to the waste situation.

Billions of healthy microbes constantly work to break down hazardous waste into harmless by-products.

A - BioWorld provides an efficient, safe for the environment, on-site treatment solution to many hazardous waste cleanups.

B - Long-term liability from off-site transport and disposal is completely eliminated.

The result is a successful, cost-effective cleanup in compliance with environmental regulations.

The Situation:

No. 6 fuel oil is a dense, viscous oil produced by blending heavy residual oils with a lighter oil (often No. 2 fuel oil) to meet specifications for viscosity and pour point. When spilled on water, No. 6 fuel usually spreads into thick, dark colored slicks, which can contain large amounts of oil. The most viscous no. 6 oils will often breakup into discrete patches and tarballs when spilled instead of forming slicks.

The Solution:

Old wooden fuel storage tanks were excavated and 6,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil was spread over a 4 acre area in 12 parcels – 1 foot deep

BioWorld Hydrocarbon Degrading Microbes were activated in warm water prior to application – then added to a water truck.

Technicians added BioWorld Bioremediation Enhancer to a 4,000 gallon water truck.

Water and BioWorld Bioremediation Technology products were applied to the contaminated soil using the water truck.

Each of the 12 separate parcels was treated on a monthly basis.

Close-up of the soil shows water and BioWorld Hydrocarbon Treatment product absorption. The soil was disced for mixing and aeration on a regular basis.

Some native plant life begins to inhabit the site as the contaminant is degraded.

Initial Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon Concentrations in the soil averaged 4,000 ppm. The target for cleanup was 100 ppm which was achieved in 11 months. The soil is covered with native plant life and could be safely used for growing edible crops.

Underground storage tanks were removed from an old service station in the mid 1990's. Gasoline had leaked out of the tanks and contaminated the shallow groundwater. An engineering firm was hired to begin the cleanup and 6 monitoring wells were installed. After 7 years of monitoring, there were no changes in the analytical tests and the firm was released. BioWorld teamed up with a progressive and innovative engineering firm determined to clean up the groundwater.

BioWorld designed a specialized pump and treat system and procedure using the existing monitoring wells. The site work and cleanup had to be performed with the existing auto sales business operating on the property.

BioWorld Bioremediation Enhancer and Hydrocarbon Digesting Microbes were added several times down the monitoring wells. Within 5 days, 8 inches of free floating product had been degraded. Treatment continued for 3 months with a 90% reduction in dissolved phase gasoline constituents verified.

Waste oil was about 3 inches thick in a 600 gallon oil/water separator at a tractor repair facility.

3 days after BioWorld Hydrocarbon Treatment, the oil was degraded for safe disposal as non-hazardous material.

3 days after BioWorld Hydrocarbon Treatment, the thick oil was degraded to a fine layer of fatty acids. (The unit was moved outside.)

Oil was about 1 inch thick after treating with BioWorld Hydrocarbon treatment products. The tank was rolled outside.

BioWorld saved this client US$400 per month in disposal costs.

Marine vessels have bilges where excess water and oily wastes can collect. Dumping hazardous oily bilge water directly into the water is illegal and can harm marine life.

Bilge water on ships is usually managed in one of two ways:

  1. retained onboard in a holding tank and discharged later to a reception facility on shore, or
  2. treated onboard with an oil-water separator.

A third option now exists - treat hazardous waste directly in the bilge water with an environmentally safe "green" alternative - BioWorld Hydrocarbon Treatment - and produce non-hazardous by-products! BioWorld Hydrocarbon Treatment is listed on the US EPA NCP Product Schedule and licensed by the State of California Dept of Fish and Game for oil spill cleanups.

BioWorld Hydrocarbon Treatment Technology BioWorld uses a scientific combination of bioenhancement compounds, nutrients, enzymes and hydrocarbon digesting microbes to safely degrade and eliminate petroleum hydrocarbons.

Simply add BioWorld's 2-part product directly into the bilge water to digest the oily waste then discharge the water as non-hazardous waste. Reduce your liability!
Save time and money!

A trucking company regularly washed tanker units to eliminate cross contamination of various liquid products being transported. The mixed waste wash water (vegetable oil and petroleum hydrocarbons) was stored in a metal storage tank prior to discharge into the municipal wastewater system.

BioWorld Liquid Optimizer, Hydrocarbon Digesting Microbes and General Blend Microbes were added several times to treat the mixed waste.

Note sides of tank – cleaned of sludge after treatment of BioWorld Products. Digestion of the mixed waste was visually apparent and a reduction in TPH and Oil/Grease concentrations was verified. The company saved substantially on wastewater discharge fees.

A flower production nursery used oil and petroleum hydrocarbon products for their operation. Over time, the soil and concrete in a storage area became contaminated. Since the hydrocarbon contamination area was adjacent to a creek, an on-site inspection by the County Environmental Health Department prompted clean up measures to be implemented.

BioWorld provided bioremediation products, application supplies and project management services. BioWorld Bioremediation Enhancer and BioWorld Hydrocarbon Digesting Microbes were added several times to the soil and concrete surfaces. Within 6 weeks, the oily contamination was converted into water, carbon dioxide and non-hazardous substances. The project site was successfully remediated and deemed complete by the regulatory agency for under $1,000.

Four steel fuel storage tanks (2 diesel, 1 gasoline and 1 bunker oil) were excavated from various locations on a residential property. Soil samples were collected and analyzed for total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) which indicated soil contamination was present (the highest TPH concentration was 8,100 mg/kg).

The County Health Services Agency requested that the contaminated soil be disposed at an appropriate facility. BioWorld teamed up with an engineering company and proposed bioremediation as a viable option.

With the approval of the regulatory agency, a treatment cell was constructed for the 280 cubic yards of stockpiled soils. The contaminated soil was spread out on plastic and contained within a berm to prevent runoff.

BioWorld hydrocarbon treatment products and water were added to the soil. The soil was mixed with a rototiller and moisture added as needed. After 2 months, soil samples were collected and analyzed. The results indicated a reduction in TPH concentrations to below state action levels.
