Oil Spill Cleanup using Bioremediation
Proven Oil Spill Cleanup Technology

BioWorld has achieved a high degree of success with our bioremediation technology. Since 1972, bioremediation has now matured to an important economical method of remediating soils and groundwater. Much of the early work on bioremediation involved adding fertilizers in an attempt to improve natural processes. BioWorld's technology provides consistent results that were lacking in the past.

Effective Integrated Approach Using
Biotechnology, Chemistry, and Engineering
BioWorld bioremediation products and services provide an efficient, environmentally safe, on-site treatment solution to many hazardous waste cleanups. We restore most contaminated sites in less time and at a far lower cost than other remediation techniques.
BioWorld Emergency Response
BioWorld Hydrocarbon Treatment products are listed on the EPA National Contingency Plan Product Schedule and the California Office of Spill Prevention and Response for oil spill cleanups.
What is BioWorld Hydrocarbon Treatment?

BioWorld Bioremediation is a natural and completely safe 2-part product consisting of the following:
- Bioenhancement - Bioremediation Enhancer liquid formulation which maximizes the ability of microbes to reproduce and thrive in a hazardous waste situation (in soil or water applications)
- Bioaugmentation - Hydrocarbon Digesting Microbes in a dry form for remediating petroleum hydrocarbon waste.
When applied to oil spills, fuel spills, oily water and other petroleum hydrocarbon contamination, BioWorld Hydrocarbon Treatment effectively digests hydrocarbon waste while producing non-hazardous by-products. To date, our products and technology have been used to clean up crude oil, gasoline, diesel, MTBE and other petrochemicals.
Depending on the project type, conditions, initial contaminant concentration and clean-up target, BioWorld Bioremediation is added to the soil or water using in situ or ex situ techniques. BioWorld provides the framework for the microbes to directly metabolize contaminants and create enzymes for efficient conversion of contaminants to water, carbon dioxide and other non-hazardous substances such as fatty acids.

|
Native soil have many types of tiny creatures called microbes. |
|
|
When hazardous wastes contaminate the soil, the existing microbes struggle to survive. Strains known to be efficient at degrading the waste may or may not be present. In addition, the microbes generally lack the proper nutrients to reproduce and thrive. |
|
|
Using BioWorld Bioremediation Technology, the proper strains of selected microbes and soluble forms of the necessary nutrients are easily applied to the waste situation. |
|
|
Billions of healthy microbes constantly work to break down hazardous waste into harmless by-products. |
|
|
A - BioWorld provides an efficient, safe for the environment, on-site treatment solution to many hazardous waste cleanups. B - Long-term liability from off-site transport and disposal is completely eliminated. |
|
|
The result is a successful, cost-effective cleanup in compliance with environmental regulations. |

EPA National Contingency Plan Product Schedule Listing
BioWorld Hydrocarbon Treatment is listed on the EPA NCP Product Schedule under Bioremediation Agents. This enables federal on-scene coordinators to authorize the use of BioWorld for oil spill cleanups.
State of California OSPR Licensed
BioWorld Hydrocarbon Treatment is licensed by the State of California, Department of Fish and Game, Office of Spill Prevention and Response as an Oil Spill Cleanup Agent. This enables the State Regional Response Team to approve BioWorld to be used for oil spill cleanups in California.
Certified US Government Supplier
BioWorld has earned two GSA Contracts - one for Environmental Services and one for products. GSA has scrutinized BioWorld's prices, references, company history and ability to provide remediation services and products. By using BioWorld's GSA contract privilege, formal bid proposals can be avoided. BioWorld simplifies the process of procuring remediation services and products.
The On-Site Solution
A significant advantage of using BioWorld Bioremediation is conducting the remediation on-site. The need to transport hydrocarbon contaminated soil or water off-site as hazardous waste is nonexistent. Permits and/or licenses necessary to transport contaminants is eliminated saving you time and money.
Eliminate Liability
As long as contamination exists, the property owner is legally and financially responsible from cradle to grave - whether or not the contamination has been moved off-site. BioWorld Bioremediation digests the hydrocarbon contamination in soil or water and produces harmless by-products such as carbon dioxide, water, fatty acids and biomass. Once the contamination problem is resolved, liability is removed.
More Than a Decade of Expertise
For more than 15 years, BioWorld Bioremediation technology has proven to be a non-disruptive, cost-effective and highly efficient method of safely breaking down many chemicals. Our 2-part enhancement and augmentation approach results in a faster and more complete degradation of petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in surface soils, subsurface soils, groundwater, surface waters or virtually any other area.
Other Advantages
- Faster and more effective cleanup over natural attenuation processes
- Environmentally safe and natural approach
- Easy to apply - no protective clothing required
- Cost effective and efficient methods for saltwater, freshwater, soil, sand or other surfaces.

Application Instructions Small Scale Projects
General application is 1 gallon Bioremediation Enhancer and 1/2 lb Hydrocarbon Degrader Microbes per 2,000 square feet of contaminated surface soil with an average Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon concentration of 2,000 ppm. Adjust product amounts based on project type (soil or water), initial hydrocarbon concentration and target level for cleanup. Contact BioWorld for large scale projects or your project specific requirements.
Preparing Microbe Solution
- In a 5 to 6 gallon bucket, add 1/2 to 1 unit BioWorld Hydrocarbon Degrader Microbes to several gallons of 100° - 105° F warm water. The result is a brownish solution of microorganisms which are transitioning from their dormant state.
- Mix vigorously and let stand uncovered for 5-10 minutes to reactivate the microbes while stirring periodically. Use the microbe solution within 4 hours and keep unsealed.
Preparing Optimizer Solution (Blue Liquid)
- Pour 1/2 gallon of BioWorld Bioremediation Enhancer into the sprayer. (Keep separate from the microbe bucket).
Application Procedure
- Evenly spray the Bioremediation Enhancer (blue liquid) directly onto the oil contaminated area until 1/2 gallon of product is used up.
- Add the Microbe Solution (brownish liquid) from the pail directly onto the oil contaminated area until used up.
- Work the products into the soil with a shovel or rake. Break up and turn over the surface soil and apply water to moisten the area (target of 20% moisture at a minimum).
- Apply water to the soil every week or more often as needed.
- Turn over the treated soil every week or more often as needed. Keep the treated soil moist and loose.
- Re-apply the BioWorld products as needed.
Product Specifications
BioWorld Bioremediation Treatment uses a unique combination of bioenhancement compounds and mature strains of selected, naturally occurring microorganisms for the bioremediation of petrochemical wastes.
BioWorld utilizes the following two technologies:
